What is The Accessibility Project (TAP)?

At TAP our goal is to start conversations around web and application accessibility with developers and businesses. According to a 2010 study of WHO there were around 285 million people with visual impairment alone, globally.

Through our discussions we will help you understand and answer:

  • Is this population a potential market for your product or service?
  • Does it jibe with your vision and mission to be inclusive?
  • How difficult will it be to make your service or product accessible?
  • Will your product or service comply to equal opportunity laws of different countries?

What is Web or Application accessibility?

Consider the case of a company which opens up an amazing island resort. The resort is decked up with world class amenities but can only be reached by swimming a short distance. Any amount of advertising or marketing will not help this resort as it is only accessible to swimmers. Similar is the case with web and application accessibility, your product will not be available for close to 15% market till you have a bridge or a boat to reach your service. With a clutter of products fighting to capture a small part of the market this target group offers a Blue Ocean of opportunity.

Most visually and learning impaired individuals navigate web using technologies like magnifiers and screen readers. The social and business need to cater to this population has been acknowledged globally and some fairly easy standards have been set to achieve this goal.

In 1999 the Web Accessibility Initiative, a project by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), published the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 1.0.

On 11 December 2008, the WAI released the WCAG 2.0 as a Recommendation. WCAG 2.0 aims to be up to date and more technology neutral. Though web designers can choose either standard to follow, the WCAG 2.0 has been widely accepted to create accessible websites. Governments are steadily adopting the WCAG 2.0 as the accessibility standard for their own websites. In 2012, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines were also published as an ISO/IEC standard.

What we do at TAP?

We engage with developers and businesses for the following

  • Accessibility testing and UAT of products with actual end users.
  • Focus group discussions on accessibility requirement for their products.
  • Engagement with development teams to understand and clarify their accessibility related concerns.
  • Training on WCAG and 508 standards for web accessibility.
  • Accessibility audit of websites and apps.

About the TAP team

We are individuals who have walked in the shoes of both visual and non visual technology users. We have transitioned from using computers and phones in visual mode to completely audio mode. Having worked in multiple industry segments we also understand the business needs and want to enable other businesses to tap into a less explored market segment while contributing to make the world a more inclusive place.
